Artists Statement

I acquire tools to communicate when words become elusive. I see opacity as strength, transparency as impermanence, and vibrance as a commanding force.

Alana Gene Landrum is an emerging mixed-media artist based in Suffolk, Virginia. Born in 2004 in Oakland, California, her artistic foundation was shaped by the cultural and visual landscape of her hometown. She began her career in the arts while in high school as an intern with Civic Design Studio, where she trained in muralism, graphic design, arts education, and coordination. After graduating, Landrum continued her art studies at Berkeley City College. She continued working freelance before relocating to the East Coast in search of new opportunities, inspiration, and artistic growth.

Her current practice encompasses painting, drawing, and sculpture inspired by visual artists Julie Mehretu, Kiki Kogelnik, Zéh Palito, Philip Guston,  Olaolu Slawn, and Romare Bearden. She is intrigued by the ominous as she explores themes of identity, emotional memory, and the passions of human experience.

Landrum works to create intentional scenes and characters that invite exploration and emotional interpretation between tension and harmony. She continues to develop her style of pop art and expressionism through a consistent pursuit of discovery and expression.
